Bamboo flowering after 40 years may push Tadoba to the brink

Nagpur: The Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) is facing a natural catastrophe around 2021, when all the bamboo plants there flower and die at the same time, leaving herbivores without food for months, and disturbing the ecological balance. The wildlife wing of Maharashtra Forest Department plans to manage this phenomenon, known as gregarious flowering, by planting 36 lakh new bamboo saplings over the next four years. This will ensure continuous supply of green shoots for herbivores, on whom the carnivore species depend for food.
